Starting A Staffing Company

By: Gabriel Adams

Perhaps you have worked in your career for many years, but you are ready for a change. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to get a sub when you have wanted to take some time off?

When you have needed some extra time off during a pregnancy, how has your boss found someone to take your place? Maybe you have had to delay your vacation because there was no one to replace you for two weeks.

The need for staffing companies has been growing rapidly in recent years. It is a great time to start a staffing company! Are you good at talking with people? This will work out wonderful for you.

In our constantly moving society, even professionals think nothing of traveling cross country for a position in their chosen field. Whether that position is short-term or more permanent, they are grateful for a job in our struggling economy.

One woman I know has been in the medical field her entire career. Now that she is 60 years old, she wants the opportunity to travel. Although she isn’t financially in the position to retire and go on cruises, she is now fulfilling her dream of traveling around the country.

Through a staffing company, she finds what hospitals are in need of a temporary staff member. During the summer months, she relaxes at her family’s camp at the lake. Since that vacation spot is in a cold climate, during the rest of the year she travels to warmer areas to work.

Late summer, she contacts the staffing company that finds contracts for her. She makes a list of places she has always wanted to visit. The staffing company checks with different hospitals in these areas. What could be better than that?

One year, she wanted to spend the fall and winter in Florida. The staffing company called her when they found her a placement. All expenses were paid by the hospital, including airfare, housing, as well as the staffing company fees.

She has become very fond of the staffing company who works with her every year. They appreciate her and they get positive feed back from all the hospitals where she works as short-term staff member.

Everybody wins! When starting a staffing company, you will have to do a lot of public relations work. Maybe it would be a good idea to start a staffing company in the career area where you have worked and have a lot of contacts. That will make it easier for you.

Contact the Small Business Association in your area. They will walk you through all the technicalities related to starting any new business. In the case of starting a staffing company, the start-up cost is minimal.

Keep good records of receipts since they are all tax deductible. If you are going to be working from home, all your office supplies, computers, fax machine, copiers, etc will also be tax deductible. Even a portion of utilities is considered part of your overhead and therefore tax deductible. Isn’t that great?

Make sure you have your computer in good working order because you will be using it a lot. Most communication can be done via the computer. You will probably want to put in a separate business phone (another tax deduction). Get your office set up and you are ready to begin!
